Keeping your cam account and payments private

Why it is worth a few minutes

Most privacy problems on cam sites do not come from hacking. They come from ordinary connections: a username you also use elsewhere, a personal email address, a card statement someone else reads, or a face or room seen on camera. The steps below close those gaps. None of them take long, and none need special software.

A separate identity

A separate email address matters more than it looks. Password reset links and receipts go to it, and it is the one detail that can connect your account to everything else you do online.

A strong password and two-factor login

The US Federal Trade Commission's advice on passwords is simple: aim for at least 12 characters, use a passphrase or a password manager, and never reuse a password from another site. If another site you use is breached, a reused password is often the first thing criminals try elsewhere.

Turn on two-factor authentication if the site offers it. According to the FTC, codes from an authenticator app are safer than codes sent by text message, because they are not exposed to SIM-swap attacks, and physical security keys are the strongest option. Protect the email address behind the account in the same way, since whoever controls your email can usually reset your password.

Paying privately and safely

• Pay only on the site's own purchase page. Never pay a performer or anyone else directly, and never buy tokens through a message or a link someone sends you.
• Check how charges appear. Before buying, look at how the purchase will be described on your statement if that matters to you. The site's billing information usually explains it, and paying for cam shows privately compares the payment methods.
• Consider who sees your statements. If you share an account or card, think about that before you buy.
• Use payment methods that give you protection. Card payments usually come with ways to dispute a charge. Gift cards and cryptocurrency are much harder to get back, which is one reason scammers ask for them.

Your device and browser

• Use a private or incognito window if others use your device. It stops history and logins being saved on that device, though it does not hide your activity from your internet provider or employer. Does incognito hide cam sites? covers the gaps it leaves.
• Lock your phone and computer with a PIN or password. On a phone, also hide notification previews on the lock screen; watching cams on your phone lists the settings worth changing.
• Sign out when you finish on a shared device.
• Keep your operating system and browser updated, which fixes security problems.
• Do not install apps or browser extensions that claim to unlock paid content; they are a common route for malware. If a pop-up says your device is already infected, read fake virus warnings and blackmail emails before doing anything.

What you share in rooms and private shows

Your account can be anonymous and still give you away through what you say. Keep your real name, workplace, town and social media handles out of chat, and be wary of anyone who asks for them. Warning signs someone is after more than a show

• asking you to move to another app or messaging service;
• asking for your real name, social media or phone number;
• asking you to pay outside the site, especially by gift card or cryptocurrency;
• pressure, urgency or sudden threats.

If you think someone has got into your account

Signs include purchases or tips you did not make, a changed email address or password, or messages you did not send. Act quickly:

1. Secure your email first Change the password on the email address behind the account, since it controls password resets.
2. Change the account password Use a new, unique password, set from a device you trust, and sign out other sessions if the site allows it.
3. Turn on two-factor login If it was not already on, switch it on now.
4. Check purchases and contact support Review your purchase history and tell the site's support team about anything you did not do.

If a card was used, tell your card provider as well.

A quick privacy checklist

1. Separate username Unique, not used anywhere else.
2. Separate email Created only for this account.
3. Strong, unique password At least 12 characters, ideally from a password manager.
4. Two-factor login An authenticator app or security key where available.
5. On-site payments only Never pay anyone directly.
6. Nothing identifying in chat or on camera Name, location, workplace and social media stay private.
