Cam2cam explained: two-way video and how to keep it private

What cam2cam is

Cam2cam (camera to camera) is two-way video in a private show. Instead of only watching the performer, you switch on your own camera, and often your microphone, so the performer can see and hear you. It is always optional, and some performers and sites offer it only in private shows or only at a different rate.

People choose cam2cam because it makes a show feel more like a conversation. The performer can react to you, not just to your messages. That is also exactly why it deserves some thought before you turn it on.

What you are sharing

When your camera is on, the performer can see:

• your face, unless you frame the shot to avoid it;
• your voice, if your microphone is on;
• your surroundings: the room, what is on the walls, anything on a desk or screen behind you;
• anything visible through a window, which can reveal where you are.

Live video can also be recorded on the other end without you knowing. Reputable performers do not do this, and sites generally forbid it, but you cannot check. Treat anything you show on camera as something that could, in the worst case, be saved.

A privacy checklist before you switch on

1. Decide about your face You can angle the camera so your face is out of frame. Many people do.
2. Clear the background Remove photos, mail, documents, work badges and anything with your name on it.
3. Check the window Close curtains or face away from windows and recognizable landmarks.
4. Turn off other screens Notifications and open tabs can show names and messages.
5. Test privately first Use your device's camera app to see exactly what will be visible.
6. Choose the microphone deliberately Voice is identifying too; text chat works fine alongside video.

Using it in the show

Cam2cam follows the same courtesy as any private show. Agree at the start whether the performer is happy to see your camera, respect it if they are not, and keep the site's rules in mind: anything that is not allowed in a private show is not allowed on camera either. Camera permissions on your device

Your browser asks for permission before a site can use your camera or microphone. A few habits keep that permission under your control:

• allow access only when you are about to start, and choose the option that applies to this visit only if your browser offers one;
• watch for the camera light or the recording indicator in the browser tab, which shows when video is being sent;
• close the tab when the show ends rather than leaving it open in the background;
• review the site permissions in your browser settings afterwards, and remove camera access if you do not plan to use it again.

Why cam2cam is a target for scams

Two-way video is what makes sextortion possible. In a typical scheme, someone persuades a viewer to move to another app, records them, then threatens to send the recording to their friends or family unless they pay. Scammers often pose as performers or as someone met in a chat.

The strongest protections are simple:

• keep cam2cam on the cam site itself, never on a messaging or video app someone suggests;
• do not share your real name, social media or contacts;
• keep your face out of frame if you are unsure.
