Why cam sites ask for ID: age checks explained

Why this started happening

For years, getting into an adult site meant clicking a button that said you were over 18. In more and more places that isn't allowed any more. Laws now require sites with adult content to check that visitors really are adults, and sites that ignore them face fines and lawsuits.

Two examples show how quickly things have moved. In the UK, the Online Safety Act has required sites that allow pornography to use strong age checks since July 2025, and the regulator, Ofcom, says plainly that ticking a box is no longer enough. In the US, Texas passed a law requiring age verification on sites where more than a third of the content is sexual material considered harmful to minors, and in June 2025 the Supreme Court upheld it. Many other states have passed laws along the same lines.

Chaturbate, the platform GirlCamHub runs on, added an online age verification system in 2024 after the Texas attorney general sued it under that state's law. So if a Chaturbate-powered site asks you to prove your age, that's why, and whether you're asked at all depends mostly on where you're connecting from.

The kinds of checks you might meet

Sites don't all use the same method, and many let you choose between a few. Ofcom's list of the methods it accepts in the UK gives a good picture of what's out there:

• Face age estimation. You take a selfie or a short video and software estimates your age from it. No document involved.
• Photo ID matching. You upload a photo of an ID document plus a selfie, and the service checks that they match.
• Credit card checks. A payment processor confirms your card is valid. Credit cards generally require the holder to be an adult, which is why this counts.
• Bank or mobile network checks. With your permission, a service confirms your age with your bank or your mobile provider.
• Digital ID and email-based checks. A digital identity app confirms you're over 18, or your email address is checked against other services you've used.

The check itself is often run by a separate age-check company rather than the cam site. You'll usually notice this because a window from another company opens partway through.

Is it safe to hand this over?

That depends on the method, and on who runs the check. Three habits keep what you share to a minimum.

Choose the method that shares the least. If you're offered face estimation or a card check alongside an ID upload, the first two reveal far less about you than a photo of your passport.

Look at who is doing the check. If a separate company handles it, its privacy notice should say what it keeps and for how long. In the UK, these services fall under data protection law, which the Information Commissioner's Office enforces.

Only verify inside the site itself. A genuine check is part of the site's own sign-up or viewing process. Nobody legitimate asks you to email a photo of your ID, send it in a chat, or pay a fee to "unlock" your account.

Scammers have noticed age checks too, and they've built a script around them. A message saying your account will be closed unless you verify through a link, or a "performer" who wants to see your ID before a show, is phishing. What about getting around it?

Search for anything about cam site age checks and you'll mostly find pages selling VPNs as a way around them. We don't cover workarounds, for two reasons. Getting around a required check usually breaks the site's terms of use, which puts your account and anything you've paid for at risk. And it doesn't make you more private than simply choosing the check method that shares the least. The pages pushing workarounds are, in most cases, selling the workaround.

If you'd rather not verify at all, the straightforward choice is not to use that site, at least for now.

Where the check fits with the rest of your privacy

Verifying your age doesn't change the other basics, so get those right while you're at it. Use a username that has no link to your real name, a separate email address for adult sites, and a strong, unique password with two-factor login switched on.
