What cosplay is

Cosplay is short for "costume play": dressing up as a specific character, usually from a game, film, comic or anime, and getting the details right. The word itself comes from Japan. Nobuyuki Takahashi of Studio Hard coined it in an article for the magazine My Anime in 1983, and it has since spread to conventions, photo shoots and, inevitably, cam sites.

A cosplay cam show is a performer in costume, playing a character for the room. Some performers do it every stream. Many save it for themed nights or special goals, which is one reason the cosplay tag is a smaller niche than most. When we checked in October 2026, about 90 live rooms were using it at once.

What the shows are like

The best cosplay rooms treat the costume as part of the performance, not a prop. Expect:

  • The build. Wigs, makeup, contact lenses, armour or accessories, sometimes made by hand. Asking about the costume is one of the easiest ways to start a friendly chat.
  • Staying in character. Some performers adopt the character's voice and catchphrases for the whole show; others drift in and out.
  • Themed menus. Tip menus and goals that fit the character, like a signature pose or line.
  • Requests for future costumes. Viewers suggest characters, and some performers run polls or goals to choose the next one.

The list near the top of this page shows public rooms using the cosplay tag that are broadcasting right now, busiest first. It refreshes every few minutes.

The rules every costume has to follow

Cosplay is welcome on Chaturbate, but the platform's costume policy draws some firm lines, and it's worth knowing them as a viewer.

Adult characters only. Performers can't use costumes, props or filters to look under 18, and that includes dressing as characters who are underage. Roleplay as a minor is banned outright. Breaking this gets a performer banned and reported to the authorities, and viewers who ask for it can be banned as well.

No military uniforms or religious dress. Both are prohibited on stream, even as a costume.

That first rule shapes how to behave. Don't ask a performer to dress as a character who is a minor, even one drawn to look older. If you see a room that seems to break the rule, report it to the platform; its terms ask users to flag anything like this straight away. Our own live list leaves out any room whose name or tags suggest youth, but tags are only a performer's own description, so reporting still matters.

Suggesting a character without being a nuisance

Performers often like hearing ideas, as long as it's done with some grace.

  1. Check the room first. Many performers list upcoming characters in their bio or room subject.
  2. Suggest, don't insist. "Have you ever thought about doing X?" goes down better than "Do X next."
  3. Remember costumes cost money and time. A suggestion that comes with a tip toward the goal is the polite version.
  4. Accept no. Plenty of performers only play characters they love.

The cam room etiquette guide covers the general rules, and how tipping works explains how goals add up.

Following your favourites

Because many performers only cosplay on certain nights, following is the best way to catch their shows. Follow a room you like and you'll see when it's live, and check the bio for a schedule. Finding shows you like explains follows and tags in more detail. Some cosplay performers also run interactive shows, where a tip sets off a toy or a game, which combine well with a character.

Questions people ask

Is watching cosplay shows free?

Yes. Public rooms cost nothing to watch. Tips, private shows and ticket shows cost tokens, so decide on a limit before a themed night gets you carried away.

Why are some well-known characters never in the list?

Because the platform bans costumes of underage characters, and because we leave out rooms whose tags suggest youth. That's deliberate, and we won't change it.
