Ticket, group and spy shows: the paid options between free and private

Most paid shows aren't private shows

Ask someone who has never used a cam site what costs money and they'll usually say "private shows". That's only half the story. Between the free public room and a one-on-one private show there's a middle layer of paid formats, and it's where a lot of first-time spending happens, often before the viewer is quite sure what they've paid for.

The three you'll run into most are ticket shows, group shows and spy shows. Not every site offers all three, and the names shift a little from one site to the next, but the ideas are the same everywhere.

Ticket shows: buying a seat for one show

A ticket show is a show the performer announces in advance, with a fixed price to get in. You buy a ticket in tokens. When the show starts, everyone holding a ticket sees it, and everyone else sees a holding screen or a notice in the public room until it's over.

Before you buy one, know this:

• The price is for the show, not the minute. That makes a ticket one of the more predictable ways to spend on a cam site: you know the full cost before anything starts.
• The performer decides what the show is. A good announcement says roughly how long it will run and what it's about. If it doesn't, ask in the chat before buying, politely and once.
• Late entry depends on the room. Some performers keep selling tickets after the show has started and some close the doors, so don't count on joining halfway through.

What catches people out is the build-up. Performers often sell tickets for a while before the show and keep the room chatting in the meantime. That's normal, but it's easy to sit through a long wait and then keep tipping during the show on top of what the ticket cost. Treat the ticket as the price and anything else as optional.

If a ticket show starts while you're watching for free, you haven't done anything wrong. The room simply goes quiet for people without a ticket. Group shows: private-style, with company

A group show sits somewhere between a public room and a private one. Several viewers pay to take part, the public stream pauses, and the performer's attention is shared by a small audience instead of a crowd. How it's priced varies. On some sites each person pays a per-minute rate below the private-show price; on others the show only begins once enough people have signed up.

Group shows suit people who want more attention than a busy public room can give but don't want the cost of a one-on-one show, or the feeling of being the only person in the room. The trade-off is control. You're one of several people making requests, and the performer will balance them rather than follow yours. Where group shows are offered, the room normally shows the rate and how many people need to join before it starts.

Spy shows: watching someone else's private show

On some sites you can pay to watch a private show that another viewer booked. You see everything, but you can't talk to the performer, and the attention goes to whoever booked it. It usually costs less per minute than booking your own.

Spying is an ordinary feature where it exists, not a sneaky one, but it cuts both ways. As the person spying, you're paying for a show that isn't shaped around you, which can feel like poor value once the novelty wears off. Which one, if any?

Start with what you actually want out of the evening. If you like a performer and want to see a longer, planned show without per-minute billing ticking away, a ticket show is usually the most sensible buy. If you want to interact but would feel awkward being the only viewer, a group show takes the pressure off. And if you're mainly curious about what happens in private shows, spying on one tells you a lot before you ever book your own.

Keeping the cost in view

Paying doesn't change the manners

A ticket or a place in a group show doesn't buy different rules. The performer still sets the limits, the other people in the show are still people, and a demand is still a demand even when you've paid.
