Tokens explained: how paying on a cam site works

What tokens are

Tokens are the currency of a cam site. You buy them from the site with ordinary money, they sit in your account as a balance, and you spend them inside the site: tipping in public rooms, paying for private shows and, on some sites, buying extras such as recorded content. The site keeps a share of what you spend and passes the rest to the performer.

Chaturbate, the platform behind GirlCamHub, uses tokens in exactly this way. Everything on the site that costs money is priced in tokens rather than in dollars or euros.

Why sites use tokens instead of money

• Small, instant payments. A tip can be a handful of tokens. Charging a card for every small tip would be slow and expensive.
• One price list for everyone. Performers can set their tip menu and private rate once, in tokens, whatever currency viewers pay in.
• Privacy for both sides. Performers never see your card details, and you never pay a performer directly.

The trade-off is that a price in tokens is one step removed from real money, which makes it easier to spend without noticing. Keeping that in mind is most of what sensible token use comes down to.

How buying tokens usually works

1. Create an account Tokens belong to an account, so you need one before you can buy.
2. Choose a package Tokens are sold in bundles; the site lists the current packages and prices.
3. Pay through the site Use the payment options on the site's own purchase page, and nowhere else.
4. Check your balance The tokens appear in your account and are shown in rooms as you spend.

Prices, package sizes and payment options change over time and can differ by country, so this guide does not quote them. What you can spend tokens on

Converting tokens back into real money

The most useful habit is to know roughly what a token costs you. After your first purchase, divide what you paid by the number of tokens you received. Keep that figure in mind, or on a note beside your screen, and every tip menu and private rate becomes a real price.

Refunds, chargebacks and mistakes

Treat tokens as spent the moment you use them. Tips go to the performer straight away, and sites generally do not reverse them because you changed your mind. If you think a charge on your card is wrong, contact the site's support first and keep a note of what happened. Disputing a charge with your bank can lead to the account being closed, so use that route only for genuine problems.

Your token balance

Tokens stay in your account until you spend them, but what happens to an unused balance in unusual cases, such as a closed or long-inactive account, depends on the site's terms. Policies differ, so check them if you are holding more than you plan to use soon. A small balance is also a safer balance: if someone ever got into your account, there would be less to lose. That is one more reason to buy for the next few visits rather than the next few months.

Buying tokens safely

• Buy only through the site's own purchase page. Nobody legitimate sells tokens through messages, social media or chat.
• Ignore offers of discounted or "generated" tokens. They are scams designed to steal logins or card details.

Do you need tokens at all?
