How to tip anonymously on Chaturbate, and who still sees your name

When you tip on Chaturbate, the tip shows up in the room's chat with your username next to it, so everyone watching sees who sent what. Most people don't mind; a visible tip is part of the fun, and performers often thank tippers by name. But if you'd rather keep your spending to yourself, there is an anonymous option. It's worth knowing exactly what it does before you pay for it, because it hides less than the name suggests.

How anonymous tipping works

Open the tip window in any room and look at the Send Tip button. There's a small arrow beside it that opens a menu with two choices:

Pick the anonymous option and the button changes to Send Anonymous Tip. When the tip goes through, the chat shows that a user tipped anonymously, with the amount but without your name.

You need a supporter account

Anonymous tipping is one of the features of the supporter membership, the site's paid upgrade, which cost $19.95 monthly when we checked. On a free account the anonymous choice is greyed out, and clicking it takes you to the supporter signup page instead.

The membership also includes private messaging, an ad-free site, custom chat colors and fonts, room previews and a one-off bonus of 200 tokens. What it hides, and what it doesn't

The wording in the tip window is honest about this, but it's easy to skim past: an anonymous tip hides your name from the other people in the room, not from the performer. So it's useful for different things than people sometimes expect.

It does hide your name from other viewers. Nobody else in the chat can see that the tip came from you, which is the main point. If you tip large amounts and don't want the attention, or you're in a room where you'd rather not be recognised by other regulars, this does the job.

It doesn't hide you from the performer. The broadcaster still sees who tipped. Most performers treat that discreetly, and it means they can still thank you or remember you, but you shouldn't use anonymous tips expecting the performer not to know.

It doesn't change what the site records. Your tips are still tied to your account, as every tip is. Anonymous tipping is about what other viewers see, not about your relationship with the platform.

Keeping a lower profile on a free account

You can get most of the way to privacy without paying anything, and these steps matter more than the anonymous option anyway.

1. Use a username that says nothing about you Your username is what links you to everything you do on the site, including every public tip. A name that isn't your real name, your email handle or anything you use elsewhere does far more for your privacy than hiding individual tips.
2. Tone down your color In a room's chat settings, under Users Settings, the Highest Token Color option lets you choose the highest color others see next to your name, so a regular tipper can appear as an ordinary light blue. Your tips still show your name, but your history doesn't stand out.
3. Keep tip notes plain A tip can carry a short message, and whatever you write there is part of the tip. Leave out anything personal.
4. Think about how you pay The payment method decides what appears on your statements, so choose it before you buy rather than after.
