Why can't I chat on Chaturbate? The usual reasons, and what to do

You've found a room you like, you type something friendly, and nothing happens. Or your message appears for a second and then disappears. It's a common moment on Chaturbate, and it's almost never a fault with your account. Rooms have a lot of control over who can talk in them, and the reason is usually one of a handful of settings.

This guide goes through them in the order worth checking. Everything here applies to GirlCamHub too, since it runs on Chaturbate and uses the same rooms and chat.

First, are you logged in?

Anyone can watch a public room, but you need an account to type in its chat. If you see a chat box but your messages go nowhere, or the site asks you to sign up when you click it, this is the reason. An account is free, and a username that says nothing about who you are is the sensible choice; keeping your cam account private has some tips on picking one.

The room only lets some people chat

This is the most common reason by far. In their chat settings, performers have an option called Chat Allowed By, and it has four choices:

If a room is set to anything other than All Users, a free account without tokens can watch but not take part. Performers aren't being unfriendly when they do this. Busy rooms fill up with spam and rude messages from throwaway accounts, and limiting chat to people with tokens is the simplest filter there is. Chronic Love, a long-time Chaturbate performer, wrote for XBIZ that she doesn't let gray users, those without tokens, chat in her room for exactly that reason.

You can usually tell this is happening because the names in chat are all blue, purple or green, and none are gray. What the username colors mean explains the colors. If you'd like to chat in rooms like this, the smallest token package is enough for a room set to Users who have tokens, as long as some are left in your account; how to buy Chaturbate tokens walks through the options and which packages are the better value. The other two settings need an actual tip to that performer.

A ticket or hidden show is running

When a performer runs a ticket show, the app that sells the tickets often changes who can chat. The simple Ticket Show app stops people without tokens from chatting by default, and Ticket Show - Automated mutes them for the whole show. Once the show is hidden, only people who bought a ticket can see it and talk. You'll usually see the app's messages in chat announcing the show and the ticket price. Ticket, group and spy shows explains how buying a ticket works.

If the performer has gone into a private show, the public room is paused, and anyone spying on the show can watch but not chat.

You've been silenced, kicked or banned

Performers and their moderators can click any username in chat and silence that person. The standard silence lasts six hours, though performers can choose different default lengths, and the person's messages are removed from the chat. A silenced viewer can still watch but can't post. A kick or ban goes further and removes you from the room altogether.

If your messages vanish right after you post them, a silence is the likely reason. There's no appeal button, and arguing about it in private messages tends to make things worse. Wait it out, and if you return, read the room's rules in the bio first. Don't try to get round it with a second account either: the site can automatically silence accounts it thinks are linked to someone a performer has already silenced.

The room's apps or filters stopped your message

Some performers run bots that check new arrivals before letting them talk. Chronic Love's room, for example, uses a bot built by a fan that asks a simple maths question before you can chat, which keeps out automated spam accounts. If a bot has posted a question or instructions addressed to you, answer it and try again.

Performers can also turn on ChaturSafe, the site's automatic moderation, and add apps that block particular words. If one message of yours disappears but others go through, check whether it touched on something the room's rules ask people to avoid, such as personal questions, other sites or anything aggressive. Cam room etiquette covers what most rooms expect.

The room is blocked or locked

Performers can block whole countries or regions from their room, and some rooms have a password. In both cases you won't get as far as the chat; the room simply won't open for you. There's nothing to fix, and plenty of other rooms will open.

Why you can't send a private message

Private messages are a separate question. On a basic account you can chat in public rooms, but sending private messages is one of the features of the paid supporter membership. Joining a performer's fan club also lets you message that performer. And performers can limit who reaches them by message, letting individual people through when they choose. Is Chaturbate's supporter membership worth it? sets out what else the membership includes and what it costs.

If none of that explains it

If your messages fail in every room, including busy rooms full of gray names, the problem is more likely on your side. Reload the page, try another browser or switch off extensions that block scripts, and check that you're still logged in. A slow or unstable connection can also leave the chat disconnected even while the video plays.

Where to go from here

If you're new to how rooms work, how live cam sites work is a good overview. The button below opens GirlCamHub, the Chaturbate-powered site run by GoGirlCam's owner, where an account is free and most public rooms are open to chat. When visitors we send there spend tokens, we get a share.
